Dairy intolerance and possibly a dairy allergy

I have a question. My son has a dairy intolerance and possibly a dairy allergy, we’re still trying to figure out what exactly is happening to him. So… this Xmas we decided to let him eat a few dairy foods. He’s eaten one or 2 dairy foods each day since Xmas. In the past it’s taken a couple weeks for the dairy to build up and usually he gets hives, his stomach hurts and he’ll poop in his pants. So last night he got hives and I said that we’re done with dairy since it’s building up in his system again. This morning he woke up with a stomach ache. It got worse and worse until he threw up EVERYWHERE!! He’s never thrown up from dairy before so I’m wondering if anyone has thoughts on this. Does it sound like a dairy reaction even though he ate nothing today? Or maybe just a regular sickness? His only symptom is tummy ache (and last nights hives). I feel like throwing up should be an immediate reaction, not a delayed reaction, but I don’t have a lot of experience with this yet. Thanks for the help!

  1. I throw up when I have dairy, I have discovered that I can have the gluten free lactose free dairy products without vomiting.

  2. If it may be a dairy allergy he needs to be tested! He could develop serious permanent illness if he's allergic and not extremely strict with his diet.

When I have anything with dairy even a little I start getting sick 15 minutes after I eat dairy I get bad heart burn and a little upset stomach then it starts getting worse then I start having pain in my stomach then I know o man I must have had somthing with dairy in it I run to the bathroom and I throw up I am normally stuck in the bathroom for like 30 to 45 minutes not feeling good throwing up and I also feel really dizzy well all this is happening ! Then like the next day I feel very tired and just don't feel good I normally do not eat much because I am just not hungry this goes on for 2 days after i eat anything for little 2 days !

  3. My little has a dairy intolerance that if she eats dairy the following day she gets severe cramping and it comes out of both ends for about 2hrs.

  4. Btw, I really appreciate all the help here. I was prepared for a few people to shame me because we let him eat some dairy. I'm new to this. I want to do what's right for him and I appreciate the helpfulness of this group. Thank you!!!

  5. Yes, that does sound like the dairy.

  6. With reactions as such they can stay in your body for up to three days. So even if he didn't react immediately the body can still see those antigens and find them to be a threat.

  7. His body is on red alert and trying to get it all away. Don't let him have it again. Is he like this with eggs too?

  8. Chickens are Fed with all sorts of grains so look out for that too.

  9. So sounds like dairy, son gets the same way with any dairy. Fatigue, flushed, poops, temperature, stomachaches and got to the point of vomiting. No more dairy for him & myself

  10. Stomach aches from dairy intolerance can last for a few days to a couple of weeks, I've come close to vomiting so I'd keep him off it until you see the doctor

  11. Honestly.. I wouldn't give him anything with lactose. Why chance it?

  12. Yeah if I eat dairy I get horrible cramps that build up to vomiting, which can start within minutes or take hours. I learned that lesson the hard way. I hope he feels better!

  13. I've had different reactions to foods and at different times. I knew I was allergic to eggs but wasn't willing to give them up and kept eating them. I didn't get sick for a long time (a few years) until one morning I had anaphylaxis after breakfast. I broke out in hives, I was vomiting and ended up calling an ambulance because I was home alone with the kids and freaked at how fast the symptoms came on. An allergist confirmed my reaction. Now I have to carry an epipen with me.
