Does buttermilk cause the same reaction as milk to you?

Question

Quick questions from a DF newbie. Does buttermilk cause the same reaction as milk to you?? Does the process of making buttermilk remove the harmful agents?? A few of my holiday baking includes buttermilk and I’m tired of playing guinea pig with foods to test if I’ll have a reaction or not.

  1. Buttermilk is still milk. Some folks don't react as much if it is an ingredient in a bread or something. Just depends on the person and if it's a true allergy, a sensitivity or whatever flavor of IBS.

  2. Depends on what your sensitivity is. If you're lactose intolerant you may tolerate buttermilk. Especially if it's homemade (commercial buttermilk and yogurt is often mixed with milk to perfect the texture). However some people, like me, are intolerant to the lactose as well as milk proteins casein and whey, so no version of dairy products work for me. Lactose intolerant people can usually take digestive enzymes and tolerate some dairy products ok.

  3. I am dairy allergic. Just use your favorite dairy alternative and add a teaspoon of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to a cup of dairy free milk. Let sit, it will thicken.

  4. Thanks everyone!!!
