Magnesium oil only stings or itches if you’re deficient?


Is it really true that magnesium oil only stings or itches if you’re deficient? My 8 year old says it itches like crazy

  1. No, it is not true. Apply some lotion to hopeully help the itch.

  3. It itched for me badly in the beginning, and for my 8 year old. Once we did it consistently for a few days it stopped. Hope that helps!

  5. It's a bit more complex than that. It's itchier when you're deficient, and it's itchier when your skin is more sensitive and/or already irritated by something else. How those two factors interact determines how itchy it is.

    Some people never find it itchy, even when super deficient. Some people always find it irritating, even when their mag levels are good. Any one individual will find it more itchy when deficient and less itchy when more "maggiefied" (unless something else is making their skin more or less healthy) but there's still a wide range of normal.

  7. It only stings and itches me when I spray too close to the skin. When I hold the spray further away, no problems.

  8. Interesting, Adrienne! So maybe it's making it more concentrated in that area and causing itching. So it CAN be true, but not always. Thanks Ruth!

  9. I rub coconut oil on (any moisturizer would probably do) and then do mag oil – stings less. I think dry skin is the bigger problem.

  10. I rub in the mag oil and then go over it with shea butter or coconut oil. That works for me.

  13. I think it means (or confirms) that something else is going on. I gave some to a guy who does take mag chloride orally (not enough and not regularly) but he also has other issues. He was on antibiotics for months for different things: appendix then a parasite, then MRSA and now for Rosecea…………told him to spray his feet and he broke out in a rash (he said he had to go to the Dr for THAT :p

  14. I'm severely deficient in magnesium and it doesn't itch at all for me and I have very sensitive skin.

  15. After doing research cause I experienced itching only later in the day, I found out that blood sugar levels affected my response. Applying the oil first thing in the morning, I didn't experience any stinging or itching. When I applied in the evening after eating all day, it burned and stung quite bad. I don't have blood sugar issues, eat a fairly clean diet.

  16. It depends where you put it too. I can put it on my body but my face burns like crazy! So do the underarms! OUCH!

  18. By "sensitive skin" I mean "sensitive to magnesium oil." It may or may not correlate with having sensitive skin in other contexts. It is more likely to sting on broken skin.

    I use it all over my body, but I do it 20 minutes before I shower, and then I put on coconut oil after my shower. I can't stand the "dried sweat" feeling of dried mag oil on my skin all day- at least not on my neck, arms, or upper back. I can tolerate it on my lower back and bottoms of my feet.

  23. Epsom salt and mag chloride do different things for the body. In general, mag chloride is better at increasing mag in the body while epsom salt is better for detoxing. These are just general patterns- all our bodies are different. We do absorb SOME magnesium from epsom salt baths, but it's hard to quantify the amount.

    Some people do REALLY well with epsom salt because they need the sulfur in it (mag sulfate), while others cant' tolerate epsom salt at all because their bodies cannot process the kind of sulfur found in it.

    I use several sources of magnesium, including mag oil and epsom salt baths.
